About Driveway Gates
A driveway gate is the entrance gate to your property; usually it will be visible from the street except for certain properties like panhandles.
A nice looking strong gate in good condition will enhance the look of your property and the value, as they say first impressions last.
In most instances your driveway gate will be the main entrance to your property allowing vehicles access in and out. This is an important security point as not only does is restrict access to your property it also stops your kids and pets from leaving the property.
Security matters to consider when installing a driveway gate.
- How easily can the gate be forced open?
- Can the gate be stolen easily?
- How difficult will it be for someone to climb over or climb through the gate?
These are important factors to consider in South Africa where security is probably the most important consideration of your home.
The most common driveway gate in South Africa is a galvanised steel sliding gate.
- Anti lift brackets should be installed on sliding gates so when the gate is closed it cannot be lifted of the track.
- In coastal areas it is highly recommend to hot dip galvanise your gate to prevent corrosion, a hot dipped galvanised gate has a lifespan of 20-30 years
Sliding gate tracks are often a problem and if a track has not been installed correctly or the track is of a poor design you will end up having problems with the gate and it can affect the gate motor operations also.
Common tracks used, but some do not make the cut and end up with problems.
- Angle iron tracks – These are not as good as they sound, they may be easy to install even by just bolting them onto your driveway but over time they end up bending and so your gate cannot run smooth and true.
- Angle iron with round bar tracks – These also do not cut the grade and besides bending like the plain angle iron tracks they had the added problem of the round bar eventually breaking loose from constant impact of vehicles in and out.
- Fat bar on edge track – 10mm Fat bar already comes with rounded edges so makes for a good guide for the gate wheels to run on. This is a good track and what we recommend and use on our gates, they cannot bend and there is no round bar to break off and once they are set on a good foundation they will last for years and can even be used as they are with a new gate installation.
Swing gates are my personal favourite from an aesthetic perspective, the symmetry and the grandness that one can incorporate into the design can make your gate a classic. The important consideration here is the posts or pillars and hinges that your gates are mounted on and as the gate gets larger and heavier so the strength of the posts or pillars and hinges must increase.
